It is also the earliest leaked build to introduce the now famous "X" close button on windows and by this point, the overall UI was mostly done and merely refined in later builds.

Installation

Installing from Windows 95 boot floppy:

  1. Prepare disk with fdisk, reboot, then format (format C:).
  2. Change path to the CD-ROM and go to the RETAIL directory.
  3. Run setup.

  • The new single Start button is now enabled by default.
  • Running applications above the taskbar were removed.
  • Control Panel changes.

Virtual PC issues

If you're installing this build in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004/2007, make sure to select "XGA compatible" as your display adapter during setup. This build appears to have an issue with S3 and VGA drivers on VPC and will not boot with them. If you want a higher resolution, you can use the Super VGA driver from build 73f/g - select "Other..." and point to a floppy disk containing files MSDISP.INF and SUPERVGA.DRV from build 73f/g.
