This build is much more stable than Beta 1 (build 122) and can be configured with sound and SVGA resolution in Virtual PC 2007 without any problems. It's available on the FTP in both CD and floppy versions. A working VHD can also be found online.

Windows 95 build 189 is the Beta 1.4 and the earliest leaked build to call itself "Windows 95" instead of "Microsoft Chicago" (though there are still many Chicago references left). It was compiled on the 21st of September 1994. Just like builds 116 and 122, it is visually almost complete and mostly resembles the final product.

Installation

Installing from Windows 95 boot floppy:

  1. Prepare disk with fdisk, reboot, then format (format C:).
  2. Change path to the CD-ROM and go to the RETAIL directory.
  3. Run setup.
  4. Accept the default settings, fill in required information and then continue to the file copying process. You may also customize the features to be installed.
  5. When complete, remove floppy and reboot.
