FIX: You may experience problems when you use SQL Server Management Studio in SQL Server 2005 to connect to an instance of SQL Server 2008

Bug: #50002151 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

When you use SQL Server Management Studio in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to connect to an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2008, you may experience the following problems.

Problem 1

When you open or delete a maintenance plan, you receive the following error message:

Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. (mscorlib)
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
While trying to find a folder on SQL an OLE DB error was encountered with error code 0x80040E14 (Could not find stored procedure 'msdb.dbo.sp_dts_getfolder'.).

Problem 2

When you copy a database from an instance of SQL Server 2008 to an instance of SQL Server 2005, you receive the following error message:

Problem 3

When you create a table or a view, you receive the following error message:

Either the object or one of its properties is not supported on the target server version. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

RESOLUTION

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, install SQL Server Management Studio in SQL Server 2008.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
