INTRODUCTION
This article describes some best practices to use for scan engine settings and for bias settings in Microsoft Antigen 9.0 for Exchange.

To determine how many scan engines to use and which bias setting to configure for each SMTP scan job and real-time scan job, you must consider several elements of your server configuration. These elements include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Available memory
- Number of processors and types of processors
- Number of storage groups
- Mail load
- User load
After you make your scan engine configurations and bias configurations, we recommend that you reevaluate the server performance. Then, make any necessary adjustments to make sure that you have a balance between performance and security. These adjustments may involve decreasing the number of scan engines that you use to increase overall server performance. Additionally, these adjustments may involve increasing the number of scan engines if the server performance is acceptable for your overall protection model for your mail environment.
Note These settings may affect performance. Administrators should adjust these settings as needed to balance security and performance. Some organizations use all Antigen engines both at the gateway and at the Exchange store and then vary their use with the bias settings and with the scan job settings. Other organizations have found it useful to use different engines or different combinations of engines at each location, such as the SMTP scan job or the real-time scan job.
For best performance, we recommend that you use no more than five engines per scan job.
