Error message when you try to sign in to the ADP Payroll service in Accounting Professional, in Accounting Express, or in Small Business Accounting 2006: "The system has encountered an error and cannot process your request at this time"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to sign in to the ADP Payroll service, you receive the following error message:

The system has encountered an error and cannot process your request at this time, please try again later. We are experiencing technical difficulties, please try again later.

This problem occurs in Microsoft Office Accounting Professional, in Microsoft Office Accounting Express, and in Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you try to sign in to the ADP Payroll service after another user signed in to the ADP Payroll service on the same computer. This problem occurs because the previous user's Windows Live credentials remain in the Windows Internet Explorer cache.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. In Windows Internet Explorer, clear the cache, the cookies, and the history. To do this, use the appropriate method:
    • In Windows Vista, follow these steps:
      1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Internet Explorer.
      2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
      3. On the General tab, click Delete.
      4. In the Delete Browsing History dialog box, click Delete all.
      5. Click to select the Also delete files and settings stored by add-ons check box, and then click Yes.
    • In Windows XP, follow these steps:
      1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Internet Explorer.
      2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
      3. On the General tab, click Delete Cookies, and then click OK.
      4. Click Clear History, and then click Yes.
  2. Add the Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP) Web site to the trusted sites list. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the Security tab, click Trusted Sites, and then click Sites.
    2. Click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.
    3. In the Add this website to the zone box, type http://www.adp.com, and then click Add.
    4. Click Close.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Close Internet Explorer.
  3. Sign up for the ADP Payroll service. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start the accounting program that you use.
    2. On the File menu, click Open Company.
    3. On the Employees menu, click Employees Home.
    4. On the employee dashboard, click Payroll to sign up for the ADP Payroll service.
