SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade the Zune software to version 2.1 on a Windows XP-based computer, you may be unable to use the Media Sharing feature to connect to an Xbox 360 system. This issue may occur if you used an account that has administrative permissions to log on to the computer when you upgraded the Zune software.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if some registry keys do not update correctly. When the registry keys do not update correctly, the monitored folders where media is located are not cataloged as expected.

THINGS TO TRY

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To resolve this issue on a Windows XP-based computer, follow these steps:

  1. Close all programs.
  2. Use Registry Editor to remove the registry keys that did not update correctly. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Zune\HME

    3. Right-click each key that begins with "S-1-5-21," and then click Delete.
    4. Close Registry Editor.
  3. Enable media sharing in the Zune software. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start the Zune software.
    2. Click Settings, and then click SHARING.
    3. Click ENABLE MEDIA SHARING WITH XBOX 360, and then type a name for the collection.
    4. Under Share my, click to select the check boxes for the types of media that you want to share.
    5. Click Share with all available Xbox 360 systems or click Share only with these Xbox 360 systems, and then click OK.
