Xbox 360: How to power cycle home networking devices

SUMMARY

This article describes how to power cycle various home networking devices that you can use to connect an Xbox 360 console to Xbox LIVE by using a broadband Internet connection.

To power cycle your home networking devices before you connect an Xbox 360 console to Xbox LIVE for the first time, follow these steps. Make sure that you follow the steps that correspond to the type of network connection that you are using. For example, if the network connection uses Windows Internet Connection Sharing, follow the steps in the Windows Internet Connection Sharing connection section.

Direct modem connection

Power cycle modem

Disconnect the power supply from the modem.
Press the power button to turn off the Xbox 360 console.

Leave all devices unplugged and turned off for at least three minutes.

Connect the power supply to turn the modem back on. Make sure that all the lights on the modem are illuminated according to the manufacturer’s specifications. For more information, see the documentation that was included with the modem.
Turn on the Xbox 360 console.

Router connection

Disconnect the power supply from the modem, and then disconnect the power supply from the router.
Press the power button to turn off the Xbox 360.
Turn off the computer or any other devices that are part of the network. Leave the devices unplugged and turned off for at least three minutes.
Turn the modem and router back on by connecting their power supplies. Make sure that all lights on the modem and router are illuminated according to the manufacturer’s specifications. For more information, see the documentation that was included with the modem and the router.
Turn on the Xbox 360 console, the computer, and any other devices on the network.

Gateway connection

Disconnect the power supply from the gateway device.
Press the power button to turn off the Xbox 360.
Turn off the computer or any other devices on the network. Leave all devices unplugged and turned off for at least three minutes.
Turn the gateway device back on by connecting the power supply. Make sure that all the lights on the gateway are illuminated according to the manufacturer’s specifications. For more information, see the documentation that was included with the gateway device.
Turn on the Xbox 360 console, the computer, and any other devices on the network.

Windows Internet Connection Sharing connection

Power cycle modem and confirm manual network settings

Remove the power supply from the modem.

Note If the modem is a USB modem, leave the power to the modem turned on.

Press the power button to turn off the Xbox 360 console.
Turn off the computer. Leave all devices unplugged and turned off for at least three minutes.
Turn on the modem by connecting the power supply.
On a Windows-based computer, click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.

Make sure that you are viewing the connection by using the Tiles view.

Search for any connections that are marked as Shared or Firewalled. If there are Shared or Firewalled connections, you may have to contact the Microsoft Windows Support Group or the ISP Support Group for help configuring the firewall. If not, continue to step 7.
Turn on the Xbox 360 console.
Try to change the networking settings in the Xbox 360 Dashboard from Automatic to Manual. To do this, use the following settings:
- IP Address: 192.168.0.2
- Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
- Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
- DNS server (Primary): 192.168.0.1
- DNS server (Secondary): 192.168.0.1
