SYMPTOMS

You remove and then install Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. When you try to configure the single sign-on (SSO) service on the computer that is running SharePoint Server 2007, you receive the following error message:

Failed to connect to the database server. Verify connectivity and rights for the configuration account and try again.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if SharePoint Server 2007 tries to create an SSO database by using the same database name that was used by an earlier installation of SharePoint Server 2007.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Delete the Sso.mdf and Sso_log.ldf database files

  1. Make a backup of the Sso.mdf and Sso_log.ldf database files.
  2. Delete the original Sso.mdf and Sso_log.ldf database files.
  3. Configure the SSO service on the server that is running SharePoint Server 2007.

Note The Sso.mdf and Sso_log.ldf database files may be on the computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server or in the following location:

SharePoint Server 2007 installation folder\12.0\Data\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data

Method 2: Use a different SSO database name

Use a different SSO database name when you configure the SSO service.
