APPLIES TO

  • Games for Windows - LIVE, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit x86)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86)

SUMMARY

When you use Games for Windows - LIVE on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, you may have to manually configure some settings.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows Server 2003 does not support UPnP architecture. Games for Windows LIVE uses UPnP architecture for certain connectivity-related procedures. Therefore, if you want to use a Windows Server 2003-based computer together with Games for Windows LIVE, you may have to manually configure some settings. For example, if you want to run a Games for Windows LIVE Dedicated Server on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, you may have to use the Routing and Remote Access Service to enable connections. This is because Games for Windows LIVE uses UPnP architecture for Network Address Translation (NAT) negotiation.

THINGS TO TRY

  1. Open all the required ports to allow clients to connect to your server.
  2. Use the Routing and Remote Access Service to allow connections.
  3. Disable NAT Services or put your Dedicated Server in a perimeter network (also known as a DMZ, demilitarized zone, and screened subnet) to allow client connections

Method 1: Open the required ports

Warning This workaround may make a computer or a network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.

  • Remove or disable the NAT service on your router.
  • Use the perimeter network feature on your perimeter network feature-supported router.

For information about how to perform these tasks on your router and about any security implications, view the router product documentation.
