APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services

Bug: #50001619 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services, when you process the index for a partition in a cube, you receive the following error message:

Internal error: An unexpected error occurred (file 'pffilestore.cpp', line 3311, function 'PFFileStore::HandleDataPageFault').

This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • The cube has a partition.
  • The data is stored in a single 65-kilobyte segment of a single partition in one of the measure groups in the cube.
  • The measures that are stored contain at least one large positive number and at least one large negative number in the same data segment.
  • At least one measure that is stored in the single 65-kilobyte segment contains many digits after the decimal point.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of a bug in the way that SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services compresses floating-point numbers when it processes the index for the partition. When SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services computes the range for a column, an overflow error may occur. An overflow error occurs if the column contains at least one large positive number and at least one large negative number.

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
