SYMPTOMS

After a move mailbox operation is complete in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), a stub object is left behind in the source database for certain users. If you start Exchange System Manager (ESM) and then locate the <Mailbox Store> object, you find the mailbox in the destination mailbox store and in the source mailbox store. Additionally, the following events are logged in the application event log: Event ID : 9533

Description: The user account for 'xxx' does not exist in the directory or is not enabled for Exchange mail. This mailbox will be removed from mailbox store 'xxxx' in 30 days.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Exchange 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have Exchange 2003 SP2 installed.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix. However, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, the Microsoft Search service, the IIS Admin Service, and all dependent services are restarted when you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

  • Move the mailbox back to original mailbox store.


Note This operation will fail. However, the stub object will be deleted.

  • Wait for maintenance to clean the stub.
