Error message in Forefront Security or in Antigen 9.0: "ERROR: Call to engine scan function returned virus found with no virus name"

Article ID: 939414

Article Last Modified on 7/17/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server
  • Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint
  • Microsoft Antigen for Exchange
  • Microsoft Antigen for SMTP Gateways

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that has Microsoft Forefront Security or Microsoft Antigen 9.0 installed, one of the following error messages is logged in the Forefront Security program log file or in the Antigen program log file:

ERROR: Call to engine scan function returned virus found with no virus name within Internet scan job

ERROR: Call to engine scan function returned virus found with no virus name within Transport scan job

Note This problem occurs only if the version of the Microsoft Anti-Malware scan engine is 0.1.10.47.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, update the Microsoft Anti-Malware scan engine.

Note A new scan engine was released on June 21, 2007. The Microsoft Anti-Malware team changed the engine so that the engine clears the registers that are used during the floating-point calculations before the engine returns control to the Antigen mapper.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

If you use Forefront Security or Antigen 9.0 together with the Microsoft Anti-Malware scan engine to scan files, you may experience false-positive results for uninfected files. Some .pdf, .pptx, .xls, and .xml files will be tagged as infected files. These files will then be removed even though no virus is present.

The version of the Microsoft Anti-Malware engine that triggered the defect in Antigen was deployed through a rapid update on June 15, 2007.
