SYMPTOMS

When you start a Windows Vista-based computer, you may receive a Stop 0x50 error message that resembles the following:

      • STOP: 0x00000050 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

This problem occurs on a computer that has the following hardware installed:

  • A card bus adapter
  • A storage device that is inserted into the card bus adapter


The storage device might be one of the following:

    • A secure digital (SD) card
    • A compact flash (CF) card
    • An external Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (eSATA) hard disk drive that is running in SATA Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) mode


CAUSE

This problem may occur if the resource requirements of the installed devices do not match those requested by the BIOS. In this situation, a rebalance of AHCI registers occurs. This behavior triggers the Stop 0x50 error message.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove all storage devices from the card bus adapter before you start the computer.
