Error message when you try to restore an Accounting Express backup or an Accounting Professional backup: "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to restore a Microsoft Office Accounting Express backup or a Microsoft Office Accounting Professional backup, you receive the following error message:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under default settings, SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error:0 - No such host is known.)

CAUSE

This problem can have either of the following causes.

Cause 1

This problem occurs if the company file to which you want to restore the backup is not valid. Or, the company file is pointing to a database that is not stored on the local computer. The company file is an .sbc file. See Resolution 1 in the "Resolution" section.

Cause 2

This problem occurs if you are trying to restore the backup on a computer that is running Windows Vista. See Resolution 2 in the "Resolution" section.

Note In a multiuser environment, you must restore an an Accounting Express or an Accounting Professional backup on the computer on which the company database is stored. You cannot restore a backup by using a remote computer or by using a client computer.

RESOLUTION

Resolution 1

To resolve this problem, re-create the company file. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Delete the company file that causes the problem.

    Note By default, the company file is in the following directory:

    C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\Small Business Accounting\Companies

  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Accounting 2007 Tools or to Microsoft Office Accounting 2008 Tools, and then click Data Tools.
  3. On the Basic Tools tab, click Restore.
  4. In the Select backup file to restore area, click Browse next to the Backup filename box.
  5. In the Restore dialog box, click the backup file that you want to use, and then click Open.
  6. In the Select backup file to restore area, click Browse next to the Restore backup file to box.
  7. In the Select configuration file dialog box, type a name in the File name box, and then click Save.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Use the company file that you saved in step 7 to open the company.

Resolution 2

To resolve this problem, apply Service Pack 2 for Microsoft SQL Server 2005. To do this, follow the appropriate step:
