Error message when you try to install Systems Management Server 2003 Service Pack 3 on a computer that is running Windows Vista: "Not enough storage is available to process this command"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) on a computer that is running Windows Vista, you receive the following error message:

Not enough storage is available to process this command.

You experience this problem when you try to install the SMS 2003 SP3 package that you download from the Microsoft Download Center or from Microsoft Connect.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, extract the files to a local folder, and then install SMS 2003 SP3. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Download the SMS 2003 SP3 package to a local folder.
  2. Run the executable file together with the /x option to extract the files to a local folder.
  3. Click Start[GRAPHIC: Start button], type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

    [GRAPHIC: User Account Control permission ] If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
  4. Use the cd command to change to the folder to which you extracted the SMS 2003 SP3 files.
  5. Use the cd command to change to the following subfolder of the current folder:

    SMSSETUP\BIN\I386

  6. Type the following command, and then press ENTER to install SMS 2003 SP3:

    setup /upgrade /nobackground


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
