Xbox 360: Error message when you try to join a co-op game: "Incompatible Software"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to join a co-op game, you receive the following error message:

Incompatible Software

Note You can receive this error message when you play various games that offer co-op mode.

CAUSE

You experience this behavior if the person who is hosting a co-op game has the latest version of the game software installed and you do not have the latest version installed.

THINGS TO TRY

1. Install the latest version of the game software. To do this, sign in to Xbox Live, and then start the game. You receive the following message:

   Update Required
   
   An update is available for this game from Xbox Live. If you decline this update, you will be signed out of Xbox Live. Do you want to apply the update now?

2. Select Yes, update now, and then press the A button. The latest software update is installed, and then you can sign in to the co-op game.
