SYMPTOMS

When you use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to a terminal server, Portable Network Graphic (PNG) images do not display in Windows Internet Explorer 7 during that Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) session. A red X appears instead of the image.

This problem occurs when you configure the Remote Desktop Connection to use the "256 colors" display mode.

Note This problem does not occur in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Install the security update

To resolve this problem, install the security update that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 931768. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Method 2: Apply the hotfix

To resolve this problem, apply the hotfix that is appropriate for your operating system.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing.
