Error message when you resume a Windows Vista-based computer from running a 3-D screen saver, from sleep, or from hibernation: "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection"

SYMPTOMS

When you resume a Windows Vista-based computer from sleep, from hibernation, or from running a three-dimensional (3-D) screen saver, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:

Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.

This problem may occur when you play a DVD in Microsoft Windows Media Player 11, and then either of the following events occurs:

  • You pause the DVD, and then you put the computer to sleep.
  • A 3-D screen saver starts.


Note The "Allow screen saver during playback" option in Windows Media Player 11 enables a screen saver to appear while content is playing.

You receive the error message when you resume the computer from sleep, from hibernation, or from running the 3-D screen saver. Additionally, when you click Play in Windows Media Player 11 after this problem occurs, the DVD starts at the beginning of the video.

The three-dimensional screen savers that are affected by this problem include the following:

  • Aurora
  • 3D Text
  • Windows Energy

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
