SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

• You join a Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004-based computer to a domain.
• You upgrade the computer to Windows Vista Home Premium.

In this scenario, you experience the following problems:

• The Windows Vista Home Premium-based computer remains joined to the domain even though you cannot join a Windows Vista Home Premium-based computer to a domain.
• The Parental Control feature is disabled on the Windows Vista Home Premium-based computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, change the computer so that it is a member of a workgroup. This change will disjoin the Windows Vista Home Premium-based computer from the domain. To do this, follow these steps.

Note We recommend that you have a local administrator user account and a password that you can use to log on to the computer. Then, you can change the computer so that it is a member of a workgroup.

1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click Change settings in the Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings area.
   

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

1. Click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.
2. Click Workgroup, type the workgroup name, and then click OK three times.
3. Click Close, and then click Restart Now.

A Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004-based computer that is joined to a domain must not be upgraded to Windows Vista Home Premium. The Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004-based computer must be disjoined from the domain before you upgrade the computer to Windows Vista Home Premium.
