WD: How Characters Map from MacWord 5.1 to WinWord

Q93310

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0b, 2.0c

SUMMARY

This article summarizes how Word translates the Macintosh character set to the ANSI equivalents when converting documents from Word for the Macintosh to Word for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

This article summarizes each possible direct conversion method. These methods include the following:

  • Saving as Word for the Macintosh format from within Word for the Macintosh, and then opening the document in Word for Windows
  • Saving as Word for Windows 2.0 format from within Word for the Macintosh, and then opening the document in Word for Windows
  • Saving as Interchange Format (RTF) from within Word for the Macintosh, and then opening the document in Word for Windows

Where possible, Word converts characters to the equivalent characters. However, Macintosh characters have no equivalent in the ANSI character set, or are otherwise not correctly mapped. See the "Key" section later in this article (following the "Mapping Table" section) for more information on these characters.

The ANSI and Macintosh character sets both include the ASCII character set as their lower 128 values. All ASCII characters share the same appearance and numeric location in each set and are converted accurately. Therefore, the following table focuses on how the upper range of extended characters are mapped, beginning with character 128. Values in the last three columns represent the ordinal values of equivalent characters in the Macintosh character set.

Key

The following key outlines the codes in the mapping table above to identify those characters that do not retain their original appearance when converted.

  • If an entry includes only a target number, it is converted correctly to its visual equivalent in the ANSI character set.
  • If a target number is accompanied on the right by the letter "s," this character does not automatically map to its visual character equivalent. The "s" indicates that the character does have a visual equivalent in the Windows Symbol font character set, and the number to the right of the "s" represents the Symbol font value.

NOTE: Font-specific character mapping is not currently supported in the conversion from Word for the Macintosh to Word for Windows. If the appearance is not retained, and a Symbol font equivalent is available, you must manually replace the converted character with the Symbol font value following conversion.
  • If a target number is accompanied on the right by the letter "p," this character does have an ANSI equivalent but is not mapped correctly. The number immediately to the right of the "p" represents the correct mapping. Such problems have been reported to Word development teams for future resolution.
  • If a target number is accompanied to the right by the letter "n," this character has no equivalent in ANSI or any other supplied font's character set. By design, Word maps all such characters to ANSI decimal value 95 (the underscore [_]).
  • If a target number is accompanied to the right by an asterisk (*), this character is either a left or right chevron and is affected by the ConvertMerge setting found in the [MacWordConv] section in your Wini.ini file:

If ConvertMerge=No, Macintosh left and right chevrons are converted to their ANSI character equivalents when opening from Word for the Macintosh format in Word for Windows.

If ConvertMerge=Yes, the converter interprets left and right chevrons as merge fields, and converts them to Reference ({REF}) fields in Word for Windows.

NOTE: The ConvertMerge option only affects documents when they are opened from Word for the Macintosh format in Word for Windows. See the "Conversion Options" section of Convinfo.doc for more information.
