Excel: Text Values in XY (Scatter) Chart Change Format

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for OS/2, version 3.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 4.0, 5.0

SUMMARY

When you create an xy (scatter) chart in Microsoft Excel, the data for the x values should not contain text. If a cell in the x-value range of the chart contains text, Microsoft Excel uses the series {1,2,3...} instead of the values on the worksheet.

To correct this problem, remove the text from the x values.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem occurs because the x-value series is only valid when it contains numeric values. If text is included in the series, Microsoft Excel defaults the x series to a linear 1,2,3-type scale.
