APPLIES TO

  • Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC

SYMPTOMS

When you open the Clock & Alarms tool or an application that uses the time services of a Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0-based device, you notice that the time zone on the device has changed to the daylight saving time (DST) time zone that is currently set for the Visiting option of the Clock & Alarms tool.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because an error in the time zone checking causes an update of the Home time zone when the Visiting time zone is a United States DST time zone.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, manually reset the Home time zone in the Clock & Alarms tool to the correct time settings, and then change the Visiting time zone to a time zone that is not listed in the “More information” section.

To reset the Home time zone and the Visiting time zone, follow these steps:

  1. Tap Start, and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap the System tab, and then tap Clock & Alarms.
  3. Tap Home, select the correct time zone in the drop-down list, and then tap OK.
  4. Tap Visiting, and then select GMT+1 Paris, Madrid in the time zone drop-down list.

Note You can select any time zone that is not listed in the “More information” section.

  1. In the Settings dialog box, tap Yes to confirm the changes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

The changes to the time zone settings occur when the Clock & Alarms tool is opened. However, the Clock & Alarms tool settings that are displayed do not update when this problem occurs. Therefore, you may not notice the change until the next time that you open the Clock & Alarms tool.

This problem only occurs after January 1, 2007. Additionally, this problem only occurs when the Visiting time zone is set to one of the following United States time zones that observe DST:

  • GMT-9 Alaska
  • GMT-8 Pacific US
  • GMT-7 Mountain US
  • GMT-6 Central US
  • GMT-5 Eastern US

This problem is limited to specific OEM operating system releases. The releases of the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system that are affected contain a build number later than or equal to build 15096.3.0.0, but less than build 15704.3.5.0. To determine whether a Windows Mobile 5.0-based device uses one of these releases, locate the release information in the About dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Tap Start, and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap the System tab, and then tap About.

Note Smartphones are not affected by this problem because the date and time on a Smartphone is set by the cellular network that is provided by the mobile operator.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Tap Start, and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap the System tab, and then tap Clock & Alarms.
  3. Tap Visiting, and then select GMT-8 Pacific US in the drop-down list.
  4. Tap Home, and then tap OK.
  5. In the Settings dialog box, tap Yes to confirm the changes.
  6. Tap Clock & Alarms. Notice that the time settings appear to be correct.
  7. Tap OK.
  8. Tap Clock & Alarms to reopen the Clock & Alarms tool. Notice that the Home time zone has changed.
