Error message when you try to add a Media Center Extender to a Windows Vista-based Media Center computer: "Media Center has stopped working"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to add a Media Center Extender to a Windows Vista-based Media Center computer, you receive the following error message:

Media Center has stopped working
Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when other Windows services on which the Media Center Extender Service depends have been disabled.

THINGS TO TRY

  1. Restart the Windows services on which the Media Center Extender Service depends. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start[GRAPHIC: Start button], type services.msc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

      [GRAPHIC: User Account Control permission] If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    2. In the list of services, verify that Started appears under Status and that Automatic appears under Startup Type for the following two services:
      • Network List Service
      • Quality Windows Audio Video Experience
    3. If you have to modify the settings for either service, double-click the service, make the appropriate adjustment, and then click OK.
  2. Restart Extender setup.


MORE INFORMATION

During setup, the Media Center Extender Service depends on certain other services to locate and establish connections to other Extenders on the network. If one of the other dependent services is not running, Media Center may stop working.
