Issue that the update fixes

This update for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Application errors may be sent to Microsoft without notice

Some 2007 Microsoft Office program files that are opened or saved on a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Web site use Microsoft Application Error Reporting (DW 2.0) to report problems to Microsoft. If an unsafe COM control is detected, these programs may unintentionally send problem reports to Microsoft without first verifying that you have granted permission for this reporting operation. The problem reports that may be sent do not contain personal information.

This update makes a change to Microsoft Application Error Reporting (DW 2.0). This change helps make sure that DW 2.0 problem reports are sent only after you grant permission.

How to obtain and to install the update

Update 932091 is located at the Microsoft Download Center. To obtain this update and to obtain installation instructions and deployment strategies, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

After you run the installation process for the update, you are prompted to run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard to complete the installation of the update.

Important Because of a problem with the update installation, you may experience a long delay for this update to be installed. Additionally, after the update is installed, you may receive error messages when you access Central Administration and browsing sites.

This problem is commonly seen with stand-alone installations that use Windows Internal Database Engine. The problem occurs because the site is being used during the update process. This condition causes the upgrade to fail.

To avoid this problem, stop the W3SVC service before you install the update. If you experience the problem after you install the update, follow these steps:

  1. Open a command prompt, and then stop the W3SVC service by running the following command:

    Net Stop W3SVC

  2. Open a command prompt, and then change directory to the following directory:

    system drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN

  3. Run the following command:

psconfig –cmd upgrade –inplace b2b –wait

  4. After the upgrade process is completed, restart the W3SVC service by running the following command:

    Net Start W3SVC
