SYMPTOMS
You install a trial version of one of the 2007 Microsoft Office suites that are listed in the "Applies to" section. If an earlier version of Microsoft Office is currently installed, the earlier version of Microsoft Office Outlook is not removed, and Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 is not installed.
For more information about a similar behavior that occurs when you install an original release non-trial version of a 2007 Office suite, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
929992 An earlier version of Outlook is removed, and Outlook 2007 is installed unexpectedly when you install an original release non-trial version of a 2007 Office suite for a side-by-side installation
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because two versions of Outlook cannot coexist.
If you select the default installation of a trial version of a 2007 Office suite, all earlier versions of the Office programs that are currently installed are not removed. Additionally, the 2007 Office programs are installed to coexist with the earlier versions of the Office programs. By default, Outlook 2007 is not installed because two versions of Outlook cannot coexist.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for your situation.
- If you want to keep the earlier version of Outlook and you have not installed the trial version of a 2007 Office suite, follow these steps:
- Start the Setup program for the trial version of the 2007 Office suite.
- Click Install.
- If you want to install Outlook 2007 and you have not installed the trial version of a 2007 Office suite, follow these steps:
- Start the Setup program for the trial version of the 2007 Office suite.
- Click Customize.
- On the Upgrade tab, click Remove only the following applications.
- Click to clear all the check boxes except the check box for Outlook. The Outlook check box should remain selected so that the earlier version of Outlook is removed.
- Click the Installation Options tab.
- Click the icon for Microsoft Office Outlook, and then click Run all from My Computer.
- Click Continue.
- If you want to install Outlook 2007 but you have already installed the trial version of a 2007 Office suite, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
- Click the Office suite that is installed in the Currently installed programs list, and then click Change.
- Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
- Click to clear the Outlook check box, and then click Update.
- After the Setup program has successfully completed and the earlier version of Outlook has been removed, follow these steps to install Outlook 2007:
- Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
- Click the trial version of the 2007 Office suite that is installed in the Currently installed programs list, and then click Change.
- Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Continue.
- Click the icon for Microsoft Office Outlook, and then click Run all from My Computer.
- Click Continue
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
MORE INFORMATION
If you click Customize when you install a trial version of a 2007 Office suite, you may notice the following message on the Upgrade tab of the Setup program if you select the option to keep all earlier versions:
This message may be misleading because you do not have to remove an earlier version of Outlook before you install Outlook 2007. By default, Outlook 2007 is not installed. If you select the option to install Outlook 2007 on the Installation Options tab, the earlier version of Outlook is removed automatically.
