Error message when you try to create a document library or a new site after you upgrade to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0: "Unknown Error" or "Method not found"

Article ID: 928830

Article Last Modified on 5/14/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You remove Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Beta 2 from the computer. Then, you upgrade either to Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Beta 2 Technical Refresh (TR) or to the original release version of Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. In this scenario, when you visit the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Central Administration site and then try to create a document library or a new site, you receive one or more of the following error messages:

  • Error message 1

    Unknown Error

  • Error message 2

    Method not found

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the computer that is running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Beta 2 is still accessed by clients during the upgrade process. In this situation, some of the .dll files that are located in the \Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\1000\_app_bin folder are not upgraded successfully. Instead, the older versions of the .dll files are retained.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. At the command prompt, change to the following directory:

    \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN

  3. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    stsadm.exe -o copyappbincontent
