SYMPTOMS
You click a hyperlink to open a Microsoft Office InfoPath document on a computer that has Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 installed. However, you cannot open the InfoPath document. This problem occurs if the computer is running one of the following operating systems:
- Microsoft Windows XP
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003
CAUSE
This problem occurs because of an error in Internet Explorer 6. When you click a hyperlink to open an InfoPath document, Internet Explorer 6 calls the ShellExecute function to create an InfoPath process. The Internet Explorer process may exit before the ShellExecute function finishes creating the InfoPath process. Therefore, you cannot open the InfoPath document as expected.
RESOLUTION
Windows XP
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.
