SYMPTOMS
When you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), an access violation may occur in the Mshtml.dll file. Internet Explorer may close unexpectedly. This problem typically occurs when you close a pop-up window.
This problem occurs after you install one of the following items:
- The hotfixes that are contained in security update 918899 (MS06-042)
- An Internet Explorer hotfix that is released after security update 918899
For example, this problem occurs after you install the hotfix files that are contained in update 923996 or after you install the hotfix files that are contained in security update 922760 (MS06-067). This problem does not occur if you have not installed any Internet Explorer hotfixes.
RESOLUTION
Cumulative security update information
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.To resolve this problem immediately, follow these steps:

- After you install the fix, you must add the
FEATURE_ADJUST_POPUP_UNLOAD_BEHAVIOR_KB926840registry key in the registry. To do this, follow these steps:- Click Start, click Run, type Regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
- On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
- Type FEATURE_ADJUST_POPUP_UNLOAD_BEHAVIOR_KB926840, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click FEATURE_ADJUST_POPUP_UNLOAD_BEHAVIOR_KB926840, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
- Double-click iexplore.exe, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
- Exit Registry Editor.

Apply this hotfix if you cannot install the current cumulative security update for Internet Explorer.
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Hotfix replacement information
This hotfix is replaced by the hotfix files in security update 928090 and by later cumulative security updates for Internet Explorer.
