SYMPTOMS
The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service crashes every several minutes on a server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2). Additionally, the following events are logged in the Application event log:
CAUSE
This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:
- Some unusual e-mail messages exist on the Exchange server.
- The unusual messages are opened by Microsoft Office Outlook clients.
RESOLUTION

Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Restart requirement
You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix. However, the following services are automatically stopped and then restarted when you apply this hotfix:
- Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
- Microsoft Search service
- IIS Admin Service and all dependent services
