SYMPTOMS
You log on to SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration, and then you try to delete a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Web application. However, the Web application is not deleted. Instead, you receive the following error message:
You receive this error message even though the Windows SharePoint Services Administration service is running.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if you are not a local administrator on the computer on which the Windows SharePoint Services Administration service is running. To delete a Web application, you must be a local administrator on the computer on which the Windows SharePoint Services Administration service is running. If you are not a local administrator, you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. However, the error message does not indicate that the problem is associated with insufficient credentials.
RESOLUTION
Log on to SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration as a local administrator, and then delete the Web application.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
