INTRODUCTION

Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issues that were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

  • ==== Issue 1: The MSSearch process stops unexpectedly during a crawl ====

The MSSearch process stops unexpectedly (crashes) during a crawl operation on a computer that is running the English version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003. A dump file is not saved. However, the following error messages are logged on the computer.

    • In the System log on the Index server for the job, you will find the following event log entry:

Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7034 Date: date Time: time User: N/A Computer: computer_name Description: The Microsoft SharePointPS Search service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this n time(s). For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://support.microsoft.com.

    • In the MSSearch tracer log or logs that are located at drive:\Program Files\SharePoint Portal Server\Bin\Tracer, you may find the following error message:

      <TRC logname="mssearch" time="date time" tagname="SrchCommon" tid="0xe38">

      <MSG>Exception occurred at address 0031a77d, Error = 0x00000000, Module = drive:\Program Files\SharePoint Portal Server\Bin\tquery.dll, Base = 00290000, Message '(null)'</MSG></TRC>

      Notes

      • The address (0031a77d) and the base (00290000) may differ from the address and the base which are listed in the error message. However, if the "Error = value" is equal to 0x00000000, you have this problem and you must install this hotfix.
      • This trace message, or trace messages that resemble it, may be saved in the tracer file. However, each message may be attributed to different problems. This hotfix does not fix all exceptions that are listed in the tracer logs. However, the hotfix does fix this specific exception.
  • ==== Issue 2: The MSSearch process stops unexpectedly when the process initiates a crawl ====

The MSSearch process stops unexpectedly (crashes) when the process initiates a full or an incremental crawl. Additionally, the following error message is logged in the Gatherer log:

The address could not be found. (0x8000FFFF - An unexpected error occurred. )

Note The 0x8000FFFF address in the error message may be caused by an undetermined number of circumstances. This specific circumstance is fixed by this hotfix. There may be other causes for this error message to be logged in the Gatherer log.

CAUSE

These issues may occur if the following conditions are true:

  • You have Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 2 installed.

The "noise word" files are stored in the following location:

    drive:\Program Files\SharePoint Portal Server\Data\Applications\guid\Config\noiseLID.txt

Note LID represents the language identifier. For example, the language identifier for English is "enu."
