This article describes how to force the Word e-mail editor in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 to start in safe mode.

Forcing the Word e-mail editor in Outlook 2007 to start in safe mode may be useful to help you troubleshoot an issue that you experience in Outlook. To force the Word e-mail editor to start in safe mode, start Outlook 2007 in safe mode. To do this, press and hold CTRL when you start Outlook 2007. Then, click Yes when you receive the following message:

Outlook has detected that you are holding down the CTRL key. Do you want to start Outlook in safe mode?

A registry setting is available to force Outlook 2007 to always start in safe mode. To configure this registry setting, follow these steps:

  1. Exit Outlook 2007.
  2. Start a text editor such as Notepad.
  3. Paste the following registry information into Notepad:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Resiliency]
    "ForceSafeMode"=dword:00000001
  4. Save the file as EnableOutlookSafeMode.reg, and then exit Notepad.
  5. Double-click the EnableOutlookSafeMode.reg file, and then click Yes when you are prompted to add this information to the registry.
  6. Restart the computer.
