SYMPTOMS

Programs that request lots of contiguous memory, such as one gigabyte or more, may fail with an unexpected error after you install security update 921883 on a computer that is running an x64-based version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. For example, programs such as Microsoft Business Solutions - Navision 3.7 may fail.

Note This problem only affects 32-bit programs. These 32-bit programs may run on computers that have any of the following operating systems installed:

  • A 32-bit version of Windows Server 2003 with SP1
  • Windows Server 2003 with SP1 for Itanium-based systems
  • x64-based versions of Windows Server 2003
  • Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

Native 64-bit programs are not affected.

RESOLUTION

Security update information

On September 12, 2006, security update 921883 (MS06-040) was updated to resolve this issue. The September 12, 2006 version of security update 921883 (MS06-040) supersedes the hotfix that is mentioned in this section.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
