This article describes how to add alternative text to a picture in Microsoft Office Word 2007 and in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. Additionally, this article describes how to add the Alt Text button to the Quick Access Toolbar in Word 2007 and in Outlook 2007.

To add alternative text to a picture in Word 2007 or in Outlook 2007, follow these steps:

  1. In a Word 2007 document or in an Outlook 2007 e-mail message, insert a picture.
  2. Click the picture that you inserted.

    Note The Format tab under Picture Tools opens.
  3. Perform one of the following actions:
    • In Word 2007, click the arrow in the lower-right corner of the Size group.
    • In Outlook 2007, click Size, and then click the arrow in the lower-right corner of the Size group.
    Note The Size dialog box opens.
  4. Click the Web tab.
  5. In the Alternative text box, type the alternative text, and then click Close.

To add the Alt Text button to the Quick Access Toolbar in Word 2007, follow these steps:

Note The Alt Text button makes it easier to add alternative text to a picture in any Word 2007 document. This includes blogs that you create in Word 2007.

  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options.
  2. Click Customization.
  3. In the Choose commands from box, click Commands Not in the Ribbon.
  4. Click Alt Text, and then click Add.
  5. Click OK to close the Word Options dialog box.

To add the Alt Text button to the Quick Access Toolbar in Outlook 2007, follow these steps:

  1. Start Outlook 2007, and then open an e-mail message.
  2. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Editor Options.
  3. Click Customization.
  4. In the Choose commands from box, click Commands Not in the Ribbon.
  5. Click Alt Text, and then click Add.
  6. Click OK to close the Editor Options dialog box.
