FIX: A Host Integration Server 2004 APPC print session stops responding and logs Event 4098 in the Application log

SYMPTOMS

An APPC print session in Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004 eventually stops responding. In addition, an error message that resembles the following is logged repeatedly in the Application log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: PPV5250
Event ID: 4098
Description:
A virtual print call to the Win32 procedure CreateDC failed.
The return code was a 0.

The APPC print session may print regularly for several days before this problem occurs. The time that elapses before the print session stops responding varies depending on the number of print jobs that the APPC print session processes.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
