APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Native Image Generator (Ngen.exe) in the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, the size of the stack frames increases significantly.

Note When you compile the same code by using the just-in-time (JIT) compiler, the same code consumes much less of the stack.

CAUSE

The JIT compiler has a mode in which most of the optimizations are turned off when you compile very large methods. However, the Native Image Generator does not have this mode. Therefore, the code that the Native Image Generator generates may put methods inline in a large method that already has many local variables. This behavior creates even more local variables for the large method. Additionally, this behavior produces very large stack frames that consume lots of the stack space.
