Error message that you may receive when you install the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and the update for Office 2003 Alternative User Input: "The memory could not be written"

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Update to install the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and to install the update for Microsoft Office 2003 Alternative User Input (KB912440), you may receive the following error message:

The instruction at 0x6000d070 referenced memory at 0xffffff90. The memory could not be written.

Additionally, your computer may stop responding.

This problem occurs when you use Microsoft Update to install these updates at the same time.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use Microsoft Update to install the Office 2003 Alternative User Input update (KB912440) without installing the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool or any other updates. Then, restart your computer and use Microsoft Update to install the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and any other remaining updates. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Windows Update.
  3. On the Welcome to Microsoft Update home page, click Custom.
  4. On the Customize your updates page, click Review and install updates.
  5. Under Select by Product, click Office 2003.
  6. Under Select Updates for Office 2003, click to select the Office 2003 Alternative User Input update (KB912440) check box.
  7. Click Install Updates, and then follow any additional instructions that appear.
  8. Restart your computer.
  9. Start Internet Explorer.
  10. On the Tools menu, click Windows Update.
  11. On the Welcome to Microsoft Update home page, click Express.
  12. Click Install Updates, and then follow any additional instructions that appear.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
