SYMPTOMS

When you try to update the beta version of Windows Live Toolbar 3.0 to a later version, you may receive the following error message:

The beta version of Windows Live Toolbar is installed on this computer. Please remove it before installing the new version by opening Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Windows Live Toolbar 3.0 beta was released on March 7, 2006.

CAUSE

You may experience this behavior if the following conditions are true:

  • You have Windows Live Toolbar 3.0 beta installed.
  • You are trying to update the beta version of Windows Live Toolbar 3.0 to a later version. For example, you are trying to install the latest version of Windows Live Toolbar 3.0. The latest version of Windows Live Toolbar was released on July 24, 2006.


RESOLUTION

To update from Windows Live Toolbar 3.0 beta to the latest version of Windows Live Toolbar 3.0, you must accept and install an update from Microsoft Update. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that the computer meets the system requirements. For detailed information about the minimum system requirements, see the "More information" section.
  2. Accept the update when the Windows Live Toolbar 3.0 update is distributed by Microsoft Update.

If you do not want to accept the Windows Live Toolbar 3.0 update, follow these steps to update to Windows Live Toolbar 3.0:

  1. Manually remove the beta version of Windows Live Toolbar 3.0. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
    2. Click Windows Live Toolbar, and then click Remove.
  2. To download and then install the latest version of Windows Live Toolbar, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

System requirements

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or a later version must be installed. However, Microsoft Internet Explorer does not have to be the default browser.
  • One of the following operating systems:
    • Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 (SP4)
  • A 1024 x 768 screen resolution is recommended.
  • If you also install Windows Desktop Search, the following additional requirements apply:
    • To index and search your e-mail, Windows Desktop Search requires one of the following versions of Microsoft Outlook:
      • Microsoft Outlook 2000 or a later version
      • Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 or a later version
    • To see a full preview of Microsoft Office documents in your Desktop Search results, you must have Microsoft Office XP or a later version.
    • A Pentium 500-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster. 1 gigahertz (GHz) is recommended.
    • A minimum of 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM. 256 MB of RAM is recommended.
    • 500 MB of hard disk space is recommended. The index size depends on how much content you have on the hard disk drive.
