Windows SharePoint Services links are missing from project plans after you move Project Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services to a new server

Article ID: 922689

Article Last Modified on 7/31/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office Project Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

After you move Microsoft Office Project Server 2003 and Microsoft Office Windows SharePoint Services to a new server, you notice that Windows SharePoint Services links are missing from project plans in Microsoft Office Project Web Access.

When you try to add a new site link to a project plan, you may receive the following error message:

The site you are trying to link to is in use by another project

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • The new server name was not correctly added into the MSP_WEB_STS_SERVERS table.
  • An existing project still references the old server.

After you move Windows SharePoint Services to a new server, the entry in the MSP_WEB_STS_SERVERS table may be updated. Or, a second row may be added. The MSP_WEB_STS_SERVERS table contains the server name, the port, the administration port, and the managed path of the sites.

In the MSP_WEB_PROJECTS table, project sites are listed in the WSTS_SERVER_ID column. This column links to the MSP_WEB_STS_SERVERS table to identify the server. The subweb name in the WPROJ_STS_SUBWEB_NAME column provides the remaining text of the URL. If content exists on the server that is listed in the WSTS_SERVER_ID column, you can access the content by using Project Web Access. And, the name of the administration page appears in the URL.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, following these steps:

  1. Update the fields in the MSP_WEB_STS_SERVERS table so that the fields reference the new server.
  2. Update the WSTS_SERVER_ID column in the MSP_WEB_PROJECTS table so that the column references the new server.

For example, if the server ID of the new server is 2, update the value in the WSTS_SERVER_ID column to 2 in the MSP_WEB_PROJECTS table.
