APPLIES TO

    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise x64 Edition

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You have a member server in a domain. The member server is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1). You try to log on to the member server. However, the domain controller for that domain stops responding (hangs).

CAUSE

When the Winlogon.exe process calls in to a Termsrv.exe process, the Termsrv.exe process calls in to an Lsass.exe process. Then, the Lsass.exe process calls back in to the Winlogon.exe process. This causes a deadlock. Therefore, the domain controller stops responding.
