SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) event buffering may delay the delivery of events to the WMI consumer. In certain scenarios, WMI may take days to deliver the event to the consumer.

If you turn on WMI verbose error logging, you may see entries that indicate this delay:

(<Date>

In this example, the delivery of events has slowed down to 293000220 milliseconds (ms) from 217 ms.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the WMI event subsystem is being heavily used.

To accommodate speed differentials between event providers and event consumers, WMI may try to throttle (slow down) an event provider. For more efficiency, consumers must collect the objects at a pace that matches the provider. If the queue grows out of control, WMI gradually throttles the delivery of events to align with the consumer's rate. This slowdown starts when the rate at which events are generated exceeds the value of the LowThresholdOnEvents property.
