Bug: #910 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SUMMARY

This article describes the following about this hotfix release:

  • The issues that are fixed by this hotfix package
  • The prerequisites for applying the hotfix package
  • Information about whether you must restart the computer after you apply the hotfix package
  • Information about whether the hotfix package is replaced by any other hotfix package
  • Information about whether you must make any registry changes after you apply the hotfix package
  • The files that are contained in the hotfix package

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You have a database in SQL Server 2005. You set the compatibility level of the database to 80. You have an existing view or you create a view in the database. The view meets the following requirements:

  • The view is created on two tables in the database.
  • The view includes an identity column from one of the tables.

In this scenario, SQL Server 2005 only treats the identity column in the view as an ordinary int column. However, if you have the same view in Microsoft SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2000 treats the column as the identity column.

To verify this problem in SQL Server 2005, you can query the is_identity column in the sys.columns catalog view against the identity column in the view. Notice that SQL Server 2005 returns the value 0 for the identity column in the view.

The compatibility level of the database in SQL Server 2005 may also be set to 80 in the following cases:

  • You upgrade an existing SQL Server 2000 database to SQL Server 2005. The SQL Server 2000 database will have the compatibility level of 80 in SQL Server 2005.
  • You detach a database from SQL Server 2000 and then attach the database to SQL Server 2005. The database will have the compatibility level of 80 in SQL Server 2005.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because SQL Server 2005 treats the identity column of the view as an int column. This problem occurs even after you set the compatibility level of the database to 80 (SQL Server 2000).

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

To change the behavior in SQL Server 2005 after you apply this hotfix, you must perform one of the following actions:

  • If the view in the database is not created by using the WITH SCHEMABINDING option, you must run the sp_refreshview stored procedure on the view.
  • If the view in the database is created by using the WITH SCHEMABINDING option, you must drop the view first. Then, re-create the view.

After you do this, SQL Server 2005 treats the identity column in the view the same as SQL Server 2000 for any existing views.

For any newly created views after you apply the hotfix, SQL Server 2005 treats the identity column in the view the same as SQL Server 2000. Additionally, if you attach a SQL Server 2000-based database, the views in the attached database are also treated the same as SQL Server 2000.

For more information about the sp_refreshview stored procedure, visit the following Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Web site:
