Bug #: 858 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SUMMARY

This article describes the following about this hotfix release:

  • The issues that are fixed by the hotfix package
  • The prerequisites for applying the hotfix package
  • Whether you must restart the computer after you apply the hotfix package
  • Whether the hotfix package is replaced by any other hotfix package
  • Whether you must make any registry changes after you apply the hotfix package
  • The files that are contained in the hotfix package

SYMPTOMS

When you use Database Mail in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to send query results to users, the size of the e-mail message is very large.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Database Mail adds spaces to each column in the query results. The added spaces make each column the defined column length.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

This hotfix adds the @query_result_no_padding parameter to the sp_send_dbmail stored procedure. When you set the @query_result_no_padding parameter to 1, the query results are not padded.

The @query_result_no_padding parameter is incompatible with other parameters. When you set the @query_result_no_padding parameter to 1, you experience the following issues:

  • If you set the @query_result_width parameter, the @query_result_no_padding parameter overrides the @query_result_width parameter. In this case, no error occurs.
  • If you set the @query_no_truncate parameter, you receive the following error message:

    Msg 22050, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
Failed to execute the query because the @query_result_no_append and @query_no_truncate options are mutually exclusive.
