SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Windows Desktop Search 3.0 Beta Engine Preview, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • You cannot install Windows Desktop Search 3.0 Beta Engine Preview.
  • You receive an "Access is denied" error message.
  • The KB917013.log file contains a "DoRegistryUpdates failed" error message.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when permissions for one or more registry subkeys on the computer are restricted in a way that prevents the update of those registry subkeys. A failure to update a registry key may cause the Setup program to fail.

WORKAROUND

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To work around this issue, follow these steps.

Note You must be a member of the Administrators security group to complete these steps.

  1. Verify that there is a failure to update the registry. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Open the KB917013.log file. By default, this file is located in the C:\Windows folder. To open the KB917013.log file, click Start, click Run, type %windir%\kb917013.log, and then click OK.
    2. On the Edit menu, click Find.
    3. In the Find what box, type DoRegistryUpdates failed, and then click Find Next. If you find a "DoRegistryUpdates failed" error message, a problem exists that is preventing the update of the registry. The error message will resemble the following:

      timestamp: DoInstallation:DoRegistryUpdates failed.
      timestamp: Access is denied.
timestamp: Message displayed to the user: Access is denied.

  2. Locate the registry key to change the permissions and to enable Windows Desktop Search 3.0 Beta Engine Preview to install successfully. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Enable verbose logging by including registry information in the Updspapi.log file. For more information about how to enable verbose logging, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

906485 How to enable verbose logging on a Windows XP-based computer

Note By default, registry keys are not recorded in the Updspapi.log file.
    2. After you enable verbose logging, reinstall Windows Desktop Search 3.0 Beta Engine Preview to capture the registry key.
    3. Open the Updspapi.log file. By default, this file is located in the C:\Windows folder. To open the Updspapi.log file, click Start, click Run, type %windir%\Updspapi.log, and then click OK.
    4. Press CTRL+END to scroll to the end of the Updspapi.log file.
    5. On the Edit menu, click Find.
    6. In the Find what box, type Error 5: Access is denied, click Up under Direction, and then click Find Next.

The entry that you find in the Updspapi.log file will resemble the following examples:

      #E008 Setting registry value HKCR\MSIDXS
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied.
#E008 Setting registry value Registry_key #E033 Error 5: Access is denied.

      Note the registry subkey.

  3. After you find the registry subkey that has the incorrect permissions, update the permissions for that subkey. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then right-click the registry subkey that you noted in step 2f, and then right-click Permissions.
    3. Under Group or user names, click Administrators.
    4. Under Permissions for Administrators, make sure that the Allow check box for both of the following entries is selected:
      • Full Control
      • Read
    5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
    6. On the File menu, click Exit.

After you follow these steps, the Windows Desktop Search 3.0 Beta Engine Preview can be installed successfully. If you experience more problems when you try to install Windows Desktop Search 3.0 Beta Engine Preview, repeat these steps until the installation is successful.
