SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you may experience one of the following symptoms:

  • The Exchange Server 2003 SP1 installation fails.
  • The Exchange Server 2003 SP1 installation is completed, but Exchange System Manager still displays the version information as 6.5.6944 instead of 6.5.7266.

Additionally, you experience the following symptoms:

  • Mail flow stops on the server that is running Exchange Server 2003.
    • Mail is queued in the local delivery queue.
    • Mail that is sent from clients is stuck in the Outbox.
  • Several errors are logged in the Exchange Server Setup Progress Log.
  • The following events may be logged in the Application log:

    Event ID: 9542
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSExchangeIS
    Event Category: General
    User: N/A
    Description: Initialization of external interface SMTP failed; Error ecVersionMismatch-MAPI_E_VERSION.

    Event ID: 1002
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSExchangeSetup
    Event Category: General
    User: N/A
    Description: The description for Event ID ( 1002 ) in Source ( MSExchangeSetup ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services, 0xc107041d - 0xc007041d - The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. (POP3Svc).


CAUSE

This problem may occur when an antivirus program is configured to include scans of Exchange Server folders and files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one or both of the following methods. First, configure antivirus programs to exclude Exchange Server folders and files from virus scans. Then, if this does not resolve the problem, stop Exchange Server services.

Method 1: Configure antivirus programs to exclude Exchange Server folders and files

  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Install Exchange Server 2003 SP1.

Method 2: Stop Exchange Server services

  1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Right-click Microsoft Exchange System Attendant, and then click Stop.
  3. Repeat step 2 for the following Exchange Server services:
    • Microsoft Exchange IMAP4
    • Microsoft Exchange POP3
    • Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine
    • Microsoft Exchange Site Replication Service
  4. Install Exchange Server 2003 SP1.
