  • Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 6.1

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac, or when you try to install a virtual machine in Virtual PC for Mac, the installation is not completed successfully. The installation may stop responding (hang), or you may receive an error message.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if your user account does not have the correct permissions. Or, this problem may occur if the installation CD is dirty or scratched.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps.

Step 1: Verify that your user account has the correct permissions

To install software in the Applications folder or on the hard disk of a computer that is running Mac OS X, you must have administrator permissions. Alternatively, you can provide the administrator user name and password when you install the software.

The first account that is created on a computer typically has administrative permissions. However, if you are not sure whether your account has the required permissions, follow these steps:

  1. On the Apple menu, click System Preferences.
  2. Click Accounts.
  3. If the word "Admin" appears under your user name, the account has administrator permissions.
  4. If your user account does not have administrator permissions, have the administrator change your account. To do this, have the administrator follow these steps:
    1. Click the Security tab.
    2. Click to select the Allow user to administer this computer check box.

Alternatively, the administrator can install the software for you.

Additionally, when you install the Microsoft product, you may receive an error message. The error message states that you do not have Read permission or Write permission to the folder where you want to install the software. This issue may occur if the folder has restrictive permissions that do not include the administrator. To work around this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Click to select the folder that you are trying to use.
  2. On the File menu, click Get Info.
  3. Expand the Ownership & Permissions pane.
  4. Expand Details.
  5. Click the lock icon that is next to the Owner list to unlock the pane.
  6. In the Group list, click admin, and then click Read & Write in the Access list.
  7. Click Apply to enclosed items, and then click OK.
  8. Click the lock icon to lock the pane.

Step 2: Verify that the installation CD is not damaged

If you receive an error message during installation, the installation CD may be dirty, scratched, or otherwise damaged. Sometimes you do not receive an error message, and the Virtual PC installation is not successfully completed. To test whether your installation media is damaged, use the following methods:

  • Visually inspect the CD for dust or fingerprint smudges. If the CD is dusty or has fingerprints, clean it by using a mild soap and soft cloth. Then, dry the surface completely. When you clean and dry the disc, wipe straight from the center of the disc to the edge. Do not wipe around in a circle. You may have to clean the surface more than one time.
  • Visually inspect the CD for scratches. If a CD is scratched, you may not be able to retrieve the information on it.

Step 3: Copy the installation CD to the hard disk drive

You may be able to copy the installation CD to the hard disk drive, even if the disk is damaged.

To copy the installation disc, follow these steps:

  1. Close all programs.
  2. Insert the disk that caused the error message.
  3. Press and then hold down the OPTION key.
  4. Click the disk, and then drag it to the hard disk drive.

After you copy the disc to the hard disk drive, try to run the installation from the hard disk drive.

Step 4: Obtain a new installation CD from Microsoft

If the previous steps in this article do not resolve the problem, you may have to obtain a replacement CD to install the program. For replacement Microsoft software, contact the Microsoft Order Desk at (800) 360-7561.
