How to share a Windows guest operating system with multiple users in Virtual PC for Mac

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to share a guest operating system in Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac. Additionally, this article describes how to configure the virtual machine so that all Mac users on the computer can modify the same virtual machine.

You can share one guest operating system with multiple Mac users. When you do this, all Mac users on the computer can modify the same virtual machine. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Shut down the guest operating system, and then exit Virtual PC.
  2. Open the following folder in Finder:

    Hard Drive:Users:username:Documents:Virtual PC List

  3. Drag the guest operating system file to the following folder:

    Hard Drive:Users:Shared

  4. Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click the guest operating system file.
  5. Click Get Info.
  6. Click the arrow to the left of Ownership & Permissions. Verify that Read & Write appears in the You can box.
  7. Click the arrow to the left of Details, and then click Read & Write in the Others box.
  8. Close the Get Info dialog box.
  9. Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click the guest operating system file.
  10. Click Show Package Contents.
  11. Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click the file that represents the virtual disk. Typically, this file is named Disk1.
  12. Click Get Info.
  13. Click the arrow to the left of Ownership & Permissions, and then verify that Read & Write appears in the You can box.
  14. Click the arrow to the left of Details, and then verify that Read & Write appears in the Others box.
  15. Close the Get Info dialog box.
  16. Log off the host Mac computer, and then log on to the host Mac computer by using the additional user account that will access the guest operating system.
  17. Open the following folder in Finder:

    Hard Drive:Users:Shared

  18. Hold down the control key on the keyboard, and then click the guest operating system. Select Make Alias.
  19. Drag the alias into the Virtual PC List folder. This folder is located in the following folder:

    Hard Drive:Users:UserName:Documents:Virtual PC List
