  • Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0

SYMPTOMS

After you install security update 911567, a file that is saved with the .eml file name extension does not look as expected when you open the file in Microsoft Outlook Express 6. The .eml file has the following changes:

  • The .eml file does not contain a Send command.
  • The To field of the .eml file may contain the word "none."
  • The .eml file resembles a sent item.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because security update 911567 disables the X-Unsent field in e-mail headers.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Forward the .eml file

  1. Open the .eml file.
  2. Click Forward.
  3. In the Subject box, delete Fw:.
  4. In the body of the message, delete the original message.

The message now has the subject line of the original message. Additionally, the message contains any attachments that were saved with the original .eml file.

Method 2: Save the .eml file as stationery

  1. Open the .eml file.
  2. On the File menu, click Save as Stationery.
  3. In the File name box, type the name that you want to use for the new stationery, and then click Save.
  4. If you have not used a background image, Outlook Express will prompt you to indicate whether you want to create stationery that will be blank. Click Yes.
  5. In Outlook Express, on the Message menu, point to New Message Using, and then click Select Stationery.
  6. Right-click the name of the stationery that you saved, point to Open With, and then click Notepad.
  7. Select the text from the "<BODY>" tag to the "</BODY>" tag. Include the tags.
  8. In Outlook Express, click Cancel in the Select Stationery dialog box.
  9. In the message that you just saved as your stationery, click Source Edit on the View menu.
  10. Click the Source tab, and then select the text from the "<BODY>" tag to the "</BODY>" tag. Include the tags. The "<BODY>" tag may contain additional attributes, such as "bgColor=."
  11. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  12. In Notepad, click Paste on the Edit menu.
  13. On the File menu, click Save.
  14. Close Notepad, and then close the message in Outlook Express.

To use the stationery to send a message, follow these steps:

  1. On the Message menu in Outlook Express, point to New Message Using, and then click Select Stationery.
  2. Click the name of the stationery that you want to use, and then click OK.

Note The Subject field in the message that you create is blank. You cannot retain the Subject field from the message that you used to create the stationery.
