Bug #: 50000152 (SQL Hotfix)


Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

In SQL Server 2005, you may receive an error message that resembles the following when you try to connect to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services from Object Explorer in SQL Server Management Studio:

Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum)

You can successfully build a connection after you follow these steps:

  1. Close Object Explorer.
  2. On the File menu, click Connect Object Explorer.
  3. In the Server Type box, click Analysis Services.
  4. In the Server name box, click the server to which you want to connect, and then click Connect.

This problem occurs when the database on the server that is running SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services is very complex. For example, this problem may occur if the database has many cubes, partitions, aggregations, or dimensions.

Note This article discusses one possible cause of this error message. If you apply this hotfix, you only resolve this problem if you experience this exact scenario.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Hotfix file information

This hotfix contains only those files that are required to correct the issues that this article lists. This hotfix may not contain of all the files that you must have to fully update a product to the latest build.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the"Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

A trace in SQL Profiler shows that this problem occurs after the following Discover command is sent to SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services:
