SYMPTOMS

When try to you install Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Reporting on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you receive the following error message:

Failed to create data source for Data Warehouse. An exception occurred. Check that you can access the SQL Services Reporting Server from this machine. Error code: -2147467259 (Unspecified error)”

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of the Windows Server 2003 SP1 security enhancements. These enhancements include a loopback check security feature that is designed to help prevent reflection attacks on the computer. WORKAROUND

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To work around this problem, you must disable the Windows Server 2003 SP1 loopback checking security feature. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

  3. Right-click Lsa, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type DisableLoopbackCheck, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click DisableLoopbackCheck, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.
  8. Restart the computer.

    Important You must restart the server for this change to take effect.
  9. Install MOM 2005 Reporting.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
